Hi All
Not living in Sharm yet but have an apartment and have just come back from two glorious weeks apart from hundreds of mosquito bites. My hands were bit and my habd and wrist swelled. My daughter got bit on the eye and it swelled up and closed. Two days later she got bit on the lip and looked like she had some kind of surgery to make her lips fatter. Have used everything to try and avoid bites. Is there anything anyone can recommend that really works? It made our time over there a little bit miserable, we were paranoid of the mozzies. Were coming to live soon and if we keep getting bit we will look like a pretty scary family..........Please help :?

I sympathise with you, when I first came I was dinner for a few months! It is my experience though that after you have been here a while you are bothered less, although they still bite the reaction is less.
You can get a spray called 'Off' from all pharmacies and many supermarkets and I always found this works (don't know how old your daughter is so not sure whether she can use it). It came highly recommended by a number of long term sharmers and it is fantastic.
Hope that helps. Best wishes
Dee

I am very long here and still a lot attacked. Felt that especially this year the plague was massive. But most probably there are just too many still waters which allow they to multiply.

Anyhow, I try to spray the flat with Raid (but leave the flat for at least 1 hour) and then use the electric plug in living and bed room in the evenings. It helps quite well. But also I try to keep the windows close, the mosquito nets only do not really work... at least in my case.

Outside I use something similar to "Off" which I brought from home with me.

But some areas are less as there are regular fumigations in the evenings (for example in most Hotels). You might consider suggesting that to your compound.
This makes a huge difference.

:) Hi Thank you so much for your replies. My daughter is 17 so she is okay to use OFF. We actually started using that as soon as we got bit, but they still got through to us. I also bought some lavender perfume and covered myself in that because somebody told me they dont like lavender!! Im glad nobody told me they dont like chocolate cake, I would have look very strange walking around Sharm.

We stayed in Delta this year and it has a lot of still water so this could habe contributed . Although it does get smoked out in the evenings.

Will close ourt windows, buy some raid and plug ins and mozzie nets and hope to be bite free next visit!
Heres hoping! Thanks again

Hi

I am also harrassed by mosquitos and found that a few drops of pure Tea Tree Oil with a couple of drops of pure lavender oil works. I put it in my hands then rub over my whole body.

In my last visit to Sharm I forgot my oils and had around a hundred bites. The perfume lavender doesn't work

You can also add a few drops to the rinse cycle when washing clothes.

I hope that helps :)

Citronella oil also works really well although it is not easy to get in a pure form. Pharmacies can sometimes order it for you. Works much better than the citronella candles but again it needs to be diluted- do not put on the skin without diluting it well first otherwise you will get a skin rash worse than the bites!

Try Listerine Original mouth wash it is a natural antiseptic and if you put it on your skin you will get no after effects. I have been using it for 2 years now and I have only been bitten once since. Do not wear perfumes when you go out as it attracts the nasty little creatures. You can even gets some wipes from metro which only cost about egp they are called herbi wipes and they are very good.
